Catalonia is the land of cava. This is demonstrated by the very word cava, which only Catalans use to refer in a special way to the sparkling wines produced here.
Being one of the territories where this sparkling wine is most produced, it is normal that the best bottles are also Catalan. That is why this year the prestigious competition The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championship has once again awarded a Catalan cava in one of its categories.
So this New Year’s Eve 2024-2025 you can celebrate the entry of the new year with a local cava that is among one of the best in the world (and costs less than 50!), the Gramona 2018 Imperial Magnum.
World’s Best Biodynamic Cava 2025
For the second year in a row, The Champagne & Sparkling Wine World Championship competition has declared the Gramona Imperial Magnum as the best biodynamic sparkling wine in the world. Mind you, with different vintages, last year it did so with the 2017 and this year with the 2018.
This sparkling wine is made with Xarel-lo, Macabeo, Parellada and Chardonnay and is produced very close to Barcelona, in Sant Sadurní d’Anoia.
Competitions in previous years
This year is not the first, and hopefully not the last, that a Catalan cava has won a category in the competition. In 2021 and 2022, Freixenet’s Cordon Negro Brut Magnum cava won the National and Regional Champion awards in the same competition.
And in 2023, two cavas won awards: Cellers Maset’s Nu Brut Reserva Organic 2020 and Gramona’s 2017 Imperial Magnum, in the World Champion Organic Sparkling Wine and Champion Biodynamic Sparkling Wine categories consecutively.
Of course, if you like wines to celebrate the holidays you are also in luck: this year 6 Catalan wines have been included in the list of the best wines in the world, so you are spoiled for choice.
