No surprises in the tourist trap that is Las Ramblas. Except for a few exceptions struggling to survive among franchises and souvenirs, Las Ramblas is not a place to eat quality Catalan food. Until now. The Forn Gil, a centenary oven of the city, has dared to open a place in the most touristic and “decatalanized” promenade of the city, and offers not only bread and pastries of (very) high quality, but also a breakfast proposal that seeks to banish the brunch of the mythical Barcelona promenade.
We are not talking about just any forn. The Forn Gil is a mythical of the city, creator of the best coca de Sant Joan last year, one of the best country breads and present in the list of the best bakeries in the city.
Torrada de fricandó or espinacs a la catalana (Catalan spinach)
They are the ones who have created for Las Ramblas the “esmorzar de torrada”, a complete breakfast proposal that seeks to make the tourists forget the brunch and promote the Catalan gastronomic culture.
For this reason, its list includes torradas with fricandó, botifarra amb mongetes or even espinacs a la catalana, with its poached egg and raisins. An esmorzar de forquilla made torrada, a torrada made brunch, so that the “local” public of the Rambla can understand it. All, by the way, with products bought in La Boqueria, just in front.
It is not the only thing, they also have great croissants, a xuxo that is a spectacle and sourdough breads for which it is worth stepping on Las Ramblas again.
In short, a really good bakery in the middle of the Rambla, where there are not many really good things. I hope I live long enough to see how one day the Barcelonians will once again become the main public on the promenade and order a torrada without the strangeness of wondering why there are no eggs benedict on the menu.
