Who cares about taking care of the tipín in the middle of summer? From lost to the river, or to the beach, and that’s why we bring you this list, to enjoy, because life is two days. Ice creams, cakes, desserts, pastries, pastries, croissants, cakes … Here are some of the best sweets in Barcelona and the best bakeries where you can find them.
They are not all that they are but they are all that they are and also, for dessert, we leave you a list of the 50 best pastry shops in Catalonia according to the latest Fava de Cacau awards, so you do not lack sweet on your trips outside Barcelona.
Brunells, one of the best croissants of the city
Although we have just finished the cinnamon roll, it’s time to go back to the charge, again, very close. Three places (yes, again) away from Demasié is Brunells, another sweet temple of the city. The bakery is another two hundred year old classic, which recently reopened after a time in the doldrums, immediately winning the award for the best croissant in the city.
Its renovation includes a café reminiscent of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory. Sitting at its tables, one can taste the traditional sweets that are made and see through a glass case how those award-winning croissants come out of the same oven that has been working for two centuries.
Carrer Princesa, 22
Escribà
Perhaps the most famous pastry shop in the city. A true classic whose saga of pastry chefs has elevated the world of pastry and chocolate to another level, with topical jokes in the form of chocolate, reinvented traditions and even its own La Mercè cake.A visit to their bakeries is a must for any Barcelonian.
📍Gran Via de les Corts Catalanes, 546 – La Rambla, 83
Granja Petitbo and its breakfasts
It is an old cowshed from the early twentieth century with French bistro inspiration that has become a place of reference for any good lover of the cuqui. If you catch it on a good day, that is, when it is not full, it can be one of the coziest in Barcelona. It has become famous for its brunch but if you go at any other time of the day, you will realize that their products are homemade and are made with care and love. Their carrot cake is famous, but we prefer the chocolate cake with ganache. Brutal.
Passeig de Sant Joan, 82
Strata Bakery
Here the doubt is tremendous. We don’t know whether to take the cakes, the cozy place or the treatment. So, why not, we’ll take everything. They also have coffees and juices that could not be a better accompaniment to the snack. There are also vegan pastry options. The best thing to do is to go blind and try what best suits your taste buds.
Carrer de Provença, 158
Demasié and its cinnamon rolls
It’s no secret that we love this place. There are many reasons to go to Demasié, but without a doubt the jewel in the crown is their cinnamon rolls. I wouldn’t know which one to choose. The best thing to do is to try them all.
Carrer de la Princesa, 28
Pastelería Canal and its sacher cake
The sacher cake they make at Barcelona’s Pastry Canal is ambrosia for the senses, synonymous with infinite enjoyment, capable of generating an orgasm just by sticking the spoon in, a reason for severe disappointment for a diabetic. The sacher cake of the Canal pastry shop is the best chocolate cake in Barcelona.
Calvet, 15 – Muntaner, 566
La Donutería and…
The donuts of this Sant Antoni’s place are full of color and flavor. In La Donutería you will find different donuts every day and, if you have a lazy day, they can send them to your home.
Carrer Parlament, 20
Forn Mistral and its coca or its mini croissants
This is one of the classics, we did not discover anything new, but it could not be left out of the list . And if we had to choose what to choose from their sweet offer, I would choose the coca. Well, and their mini chocolate croissants that are eaten like pipes.
Rda. de Sant AnEntradatoni, 96
La Pastisseria Barcelona
With two locations in the city, La Pastisseria is known for its delicate pieces, ranging from croissants to unique pastries such as pistachio and raspberry. Founded by Josep Maria Rodríguez Guerola and Ana Jarquín, both trained at Hoffman, this pastry shop offers a cozy atmosphere and also pastry courses for those interested in learning the pastry art.
C/ d’Aragó, 228 and Via Augusta, 166, Barcelona
Oriol Balaguer
With premises in Las Corts, Sarrià and the Born, little can be said about Oriol Balaguer. One of the deans of the pastry in the city, he is famous, among others, for his personalized chocolate bars, but also watch out for the La Mercè cake that he prepares, which we tried recently, and we loved it.
Pl. Sant Gregori Taumaturg, 2 (Las Corts), Carrer Benet Mateu, 62 (Sarrià), Carrer Fusina, 5 (Born), Barcelona
Takashi Ochiai
This Japanese pastry shop was a pioneer in bringing (or preparing) the best of Japanese pastries to Barcelona. It has become famous for its mochis and also its croissants, but the truth is that any of its sweets are worth the effort. And although they offer a unique fusion of Japanese and French pastries, go for their dorayakis and other traditional Japanese sweets, have a coffee in their cafeteria and enjoy life.
Carrer del Comte d’Urgell, 110, 08011 Barcelona
Delacrem and its fantasy ice creams
Okay, it’s not a pastry shop, but as if it were. We are talking about one of the best ice creams in Barcelona. And, therefore, one of the best sweets, so its place here is justified. The queues in summer to buy an ice cream in one of its locals can be desperate but worth it. And if you have already tried them, here is our list of the best ice cream parlors in Barcelona.
Enric Granados, 15 and Passeig Sant Joan, 59
Sil’s Cakes American Pastry and cookies
As a good American pastry shop, here everything is big. And not only their cookies are spectacular. Their cakes so well are a visual spectacle and a pleasure for the palate. And if you want to keep trying other cookies, here is the list of the best cookies in Barcelona.
Carrer del Torrent de l’Olla, 62
Foix de Sarrià and its buñuelos de viento (wind fritters)
Located at the top of the city, Foix is another of the epicenters of the sweet. In 1886 it opened its doors backed by a master pastry chef, Josep Foix Ribera. A project that has been going on for more than 125 years and that continues to show us that everything they touch is sweet art: panettone, panellets, briochería…
Major de Sarrià, 57
Jon Cake and its cheesecake
What can we say about Jon Cake that we haven’t already said? The leader of the cheesecake revolution in Barcelona has kilometric queues every day in his small place in the Born, and his cheesecake is so successful that he has even dared to open a wine and cheesecake bar in Les Corts that is worth a visit.
A piece of cheesecake with a thousand versions of a thousand different cheeses that is worth trying (or ordering to save you the queue).
Carrer dels Assaonadors, 29 – Carrer de Gelabert, 42
Maru Botana, the best cakes from Argentina, in Barcelona
We can all intuit what makes a pastry shop popular: the quality of its products, its visual appeal for social networks, or the ability to create a star product that attracts crowds. But what allows a pastry chef to stand out beyond her business and become an Instagram sensation with more than 1.5 million followers?“Proximity, our pastries are close”.
This is how Maru Botana, with her intense look, strong arms and blonde hair, describes the cakes she makes. This approach has made her a prominent businesswoman in Argentina, with multiple locations in the country, a large following and several television programs. Now, Maru has expanded her success to Barcelona with a bakery in the heart of Barcelona. Keep an eye out for her milhojas and any cake with dulce de leche.
📍Carrer de Roger de Llúria, 114, L’Eixample, 08037 Barcelona
Hofmann: The Dean of Sweets in Barcelona
We finish this tour without time to burn off the calories ingested. We arrived at Hofmann, the queen of gourmet pastries in Barcelona. Their croissants have been awarded several times, and it is not difficult to understand why. In addition to the classics, their showcases display croissants filled with mascarpone, chocolate or pistachio, which are authentic delicacies, and for those who want to take the sweet to another level, they also offer designer cakes that are true works of art: fine, delicate and delicious, perfect to close this stroll through the pleasure of sweet treats.
📍Carrer dels Flassaders, 44
The best pastry shops in Catalonia (according to the Fava de Cacau awards).
The City Council of Sant Vicenç dels Horts has celebrated this weekend the 5th edition of the Fava de Cacau awards, a distinction that recognizes the 50 best pastry shops in Catalonia. The Hofmann pastry shop is the best in the area of Barcelona and counties, among other special mentions, which have been delivered in the framework of the VII Mostra Internacional de Pastisseria, organized by the municipality on 19, 20 and 21 January 2024.
With two pastry shops in the city (Pau Cassals and Flassaders) and a specialized school (Argenteria), Hofmann has positioned itself as the reference in the Catalan capital. With two sales channels, physical and online, the bakery has become one of the most demanded in the city, for its innovation.
And this has also been recognized by the guild, which has awarded this 2024 the Fava d’Or for being the most innovative pastry shop in Catalonia.
The awards recognize the best establishments in Catalonia through a selection process carried out by professionals in the sector. The jury was coordinated by Marc Balaguer, Spanish Pastry Champion in 2015 and World Ice Cream World Runner-up in 2018.
In this edition, in addition to the case of Hofmann, the 50 best pastry shops in Catalonia were selected, also awarded with the Fava de Cacau.
This year, 10 special mentions have also been awarded in the following categories: Fava d’Or to the innovative pastry, Fava d’Or to the historical value (previously called Fava d’Or to the living tradition), Fava d’Or to the singular sweet and the Faves d’Or to the best pastry shops in 7 geographical areas of Catalonia.
