Few dreams are more shared in the common imagination when we talk about freedom and travel than that of taking a car to nowhere and burning up the road without worrying about anything (not even the price of gasoline). And although the American Route 66 is somewhat far from home , in Catalonia we have a route ready to make a road-trip that has risen among the four best roads in the world according to Condé Nast magazine.
It is the Grand Tour of Catalonia, a circular itinerary that covers the entire Catalan territory. With a total of 2,000 kilometers, the Grand Tour can be done in a single 13-day trip or divided into five independent sections, each with its own charm and must-see places.
But the section that has taken the Condé Nast award is the one connecting La Seu d’Urgell and Figueres, along 357 kilometer s of road at the foot of the Pyrenees in Catalonia. A true ode to nature where you can find from the only fully Romanesque cathedral in Catalonia to the breathtaking landscapes of Padraforca, the Vall de Núria, the area of Olot and La Garrotxa (with its Fageda d’en Jordà) to pass through Banyoles, the largest lake in Catalonia or Castelfollit de la Roca.
The route, promoted by the Agència Catalana de Turisme, e is an authentic road-trip of fantasy through the foothills of the Pyrenees, which takes us from the mountains to the gates of the Empordà and the sea in Figueres. A perfect walk for autumn, now that it is neither so cold nor so hot that will allow us to discover some of the most beautiful areas of Catalonia.
