There are moments that become lifelong memories. It may be for emotional, personal, or contextual reasons… or simply because of an image that makes an impact on us and remains etched in our memory. The common thread among most of these memories is that they are unexpected—unpredictable situations that mark a turning point in our lives.
But there is another small group of phenomena that we experience only once in a lifetime, that we will remember forever, and that we can plan for well in advance. The eclipse on Wednesday, August 12, is one of those moments, and to ensure that this is an unforgettable experience for as many people as possible, the Montsec Astronomical Park (PAM) will set up three observation points and accompany the event with educational activities that will be broadcast live.
PAM, one of Catalonia’s leading centers for science outreach, will divide its team of astronomers into three observation zones located in the province of Lleida:
- The Mangraners soccer field (Calle Vila-rodona, Lleida). An elevated, unobstructed spot from which you can enjoy the eclipse in its entirety.
- The Turó de la Seu Vella, at the Castillo del Rey-Suda, and at the Baluarte del Rey (Lleida). The viewing area will be set up on the highest parts of the western slope of the historic complex.
- Les Borges Blanques, behind the Ramón Espasa municipal soccer field. With a capacity for about 2,500 people in an open space free of barriers that would obstruct viewing.
The priority is to ensure a clear view of the phenomenon, which is why viewing sites have been set up in elevated areas, free of obstructions, and with ample capacity to accommodate as many residents as possible.
Another PAM team will travel to the Ebro Observatory in Roquetes, Tarragona. This location will not be open to visitors, as it will remain closed due to capacity restrictions. However, it is from here that the educational lectures, family workshops, and astronomy activities will be held and broadcast via the YouTube channel.
How to Get to the Viewing Spots from Barcelona
If you’d like to enjoy the eclipse from any of the viewing areas set up by the Montsec team of astronomers, getting there from Barcelona is very easy, whether by car or via the Rodalies public transit network.
To get to the Mangraners soccer field or the Turó de la Seu Vella, the two most direct routes are via the AP-2 and the AP-7. The R13 and R14 lines of Rodalies de Catalunya also connect stations in Barcelona with the Lleida-Pirineus station, just a few minutes’ walk from the viewing spots (it’s important to check schedules and availability due to service disruptions caused by cable theft). If, on the other hand, you’d prefer to enjoy the view from the viewing point at Les Borges Blanques, the route is very similar, with the AP-2 being the most direct connection or the R13 and R14 lines of Rodalies.
