Easter is approaching and that means that is time for mona, that Catalan chocolate fantasy where the godfathers and godmothers give their godchildren a chocolate figure with the most bizarre shape possible. And to know better where to look for is the contest for “The best Easter Mona”, which this year celebrates its fourth edition.
As every year, it has had two categories: traditional brioche Mona and chocolate Mona, which a professional jury has evaluated to end up rewarding several bakeries in Barcelona.
The three best monas of Barcelona in 2025.
This year , the main prize for Barcelona has been in the category of Mona de chocolate, which has won the pastry Foix de Sarrià with a gorilla-shaped piece that has dazzled. This mona, 40 cm high and 4 kilos of chocolate, can, by the way, be purchased for 450 … a good luxury, but not every day you eat the best mona de Catalunya. Otherwise, in the window of his store in Sarrià there are other pieces that also serve to kill the craving.
The silver medal also went to Barcelona with Eukarya Xocolata,by master chocolatier Lluc Cruselles, with a proposal inspired by the animal world, while L’Atelier Barcelona closed the podium with an impressive sculpture of a tiger in chocolate.
In the category of Traditional Mona, the gold went to Passions Origen del Vendrell, with a recipe that combines ground anise, coriander, vanilla and Anís del Mono. Second place went to LaPalma Pastissers, and third place went back to Barcelona to Obrador dels 15 with its brioche with pistachio touches.
This edition has opened its doors to the public for the first time, and has allowed to enjoy a giant chocolate egg of more than 30 kilos, prepared by the students of the master chocolatier Sergi Vela of the EHITB.
Of course, these are not the only big monas in Barcelona. That’s why we leave you here below a link to our list of the best monas in the city.
