The menu of the day is a concept so ingrained in the country’s popular culture that no one can say they have ever ordered one. A well-priced starter, main course and dessert is all that a worker from any walk of life needs to fill up the gas tank and get on with his or her Monday through Friday day.
and what is its Inception? Nothing more and nothing less than a measure that sought to promote tourism in Spain during the 1960s. The Minister of Tourism at the time, Manuel Fraga, made its implementation mandatory in all restaurants and the administration itself also set the price.
Price fixing was never a good idea, it was unsustainable for restaurateurs, so soon prices were liberalized and things improved. The menu of the day continued to be a cheaper option than eating from a cart to, and at the same time very complete, including regional specialties and a selection of the most popular dishes.
After telling you all this, it is worth noting that the daily menu is no longer just for tourists: it belongs to all of us, and booking at least one day during the week to enjoy the best menus of the day in Barcelona should be a must.
So if you want to discover the best specialties of some of these restaurants on your lunch break, don’t miss this updated compilation of the best menus in town:
Claris 118, a hybrid between the modern and the classic
Claris 118, located in the former premises of Mirym Restaurant, was rebuilt and modernized before the pandemic by its new owners Ever Cubilla (former chef of Espai Kru) and Laura Monedero. With a menu to choose from eight starters, eight mains and eight desserts, it’s clear that you’re going to be able to make as many combinations as there are weeks in the year, so we can say that this menu of the day should be among your priorities to try in the coming weeks.
The place is practically a typical eating house, with Catalan food, but Ever wanted to give it a more modern touch. Among its starters, more original than classic salads such as endive, red pesto, bacon and seeds, and among the options for main courses we can find very good local products such as cod ‘skrei’ a la ‘llauna’ or beef tenderloin cured for 20 days.
